Fan-tan Definition & Meaning

The game requires a standard 52 playing card deck and a set of poker chips for each player. The objective is to be the first to play all of your cards. Beginning with the player to dealer’s left, each player must play a 7 or else add on to cards in suit sequences ascending or descending from the 7s. Once the 7 has been played, for example, the 8 and 6 can be played. Sequences ascend to the king and descend to the ace. Once an end card is reached, fold up the row of cards and turn them over.

Thereafter, each must play a card of the same suit and in unbroken sequence with one already on the table or may play a 7. The first player to play all his cards wins the pool, to which each of the others must add one counter for each of his unplayed cards. The card game Fan-Tan should not be confused with the ancient Chinese bank game of the same name. Fan Tan, Sevens, or Play-or-Pay is a casino type game for three to eight players.

In its modern casino version, a winning bet is instead paid off at 4 for 1, minus a commission, which usually is 5 percent. Other types of bets are also permitted in casinos, such as on odd or even numbers. Fan-tan should not be confused with the sequential card game fan-tan. In the modern game, the “Hong” (row) bet is usually replaced by two alternative three-number bets. The first of these is the “Tan” or “Nga Tan” bet (丫攤; yā tān; ngaa1 taan1; ‘booth’). Two positions are chosen as the primary wager, and one position is chosen as the secondary “push” wager; there are twelve possible combinations of this type of bet, and each position has six corresponding primary and three secondary wagers.

Whenever you can’t play one of your cards, pass and toss one chip into the kitty (the bowl). Whoever is out of cards first collects the chips in the kitty, plus one chip per card left in each player’s hand. Beginning with the player to the left of the dealer, each player in turn must play a card if able; players who cannot play must pay one counter to the pool. In some versions, play is begun not by the player to dealer’s left but by the holder of the seven of diamonds, who must play it as the first card.

Fan Tan, also known as Sevens or Domino and in Britain sometimes as Parliament is a straightforward game in which the object is to get rid of all one’s cards by playing them to a layout. This version of Fan Tan, also referred to as Sevens or Domino, and in the United Kingdom as Parliament, is a simple game of shedding card into a layout. There is another version of Fan Tan which employs betting, however that version will not be described and has different rules and card rankings. All cards played remain face up on the table, arranged in four rows of the four suits.

The player left of the dealer begins by (if they can) placing a 7 in the center of the table. Players either play a 7 or build upon an existing 7 pile. To do so, a card must be of the same suit as the 7 and either be a rank above or below the card they want to play on. For example, if the 7 of Clubs has been played, another player can place the 6 of Clubs on it, while another player can play the 5 of Clubs on the 6 and so on. Before gameplay can begin, a dealer must be selected.

  • The goal is to be the first player to get rid of all of their cards.
  • Thus, some hands may contain one more card than others.
  • The deal passes out cards one at a time, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer, until all cards are dealt.
  • There is another version of Fan Tan which employs betting, however that version will not be described and has different rules and card rankings.

To do so, players must choose a random card from a shuffled deck. The dealer shuffles the deck and passes out all of the cards face down to every player one at a time. Each player must play a card during their turn if possible; if the person cannot play, they put one chip in the pot and the turn passes to the https://www.gclub.co/fan-tan/ left. The game ends when one player gets rid of all of their cards. Each opponent then pays the pot one chip for each card remaining in their hand, and the winner takes the pot. The game is played by placing two handfuls of small objects on a board and guessing the remaining count when divided by four.

It is customary for each player with fewer cards to ante one additional chip. I do not know whether this version of the game is commonly played in some part of the world. In some groups, everyone pays a chip to a common pool before the deal, and anyone who passes must add a chip to the pool.

The net payout for each bet is determined by the true odds. The net payout for each bet is calculated as Losing odds/Winning odds, less the cut for the house. The odds of the “push” or secondary positions only affect the calculation of net payout by reducing the number of losing bets because when the result is a push, the original wager is returned without loss. Any player may deal first, and the turn to deal passes to the left. The dealer shuffles thoroughly and the player to dealer’s right may cut. The dealer deals all the cards, clockwise one at a time, starting with the player to dealer’s left.

Fan-tan is played mainly in East Asia, where it can be found in casinos and gambling houses, and among Chinese communities elsewhere, though occasionally it has been offered in casinos in Nevada. A square is laid out in the centre of a table, its sides marked 1, 2, 3, and 4. He then segregates about 60–100 of them with a smaller cup, after which he rapidly removes the remaining objects four at a time with a small bamboo stick until four or fewer are left. This is the winning number; if four coins remain, the number 4 wins, and so on. A winning bet is traditionally paid off at 3 for 1 (for each unit staked, the winning player receives his bet back plus 2 units), a huge advantage of 25 percent for the bank.

After players have cast bets on values of 1 through 4, the dealer or croupier repeatedly removes four objects from the board until only one, two, three or four beans remain, determining the winner. Deal the cards one at a time face down, beginning with the player on the left. All the cards are dealt, and some players may receive fewer cards than others.
